Q: Is there still a health crisis in London?
In order to fully answer this question, it is imperative to understand the global climate. The impact that the covid 19 pandemic and its subsequent variants has been detrimental on the world. The pandemic has caused multiple economic and social downfalls as well as over 5.27 million deaths worldwide. So in short, the world is experiencing a monumental health crisis. However, many countries have, in large, overcome the pandemic; but if we focus on the city of London can the same be said?
The city of London and greater London houses a population of nearly 9 million people over an area of over 1.572 km2, making it one of the largest and most populated areas in the United Kingdom. Thus, this meant that the city was one of the hardest hit by the pandemic due to its population by square footage. Currently as of December 2021, London covid cases are on a rise due to the presence of the new Omicron variant, as well as the lack of restrictions. As of early December, the daily amount of covid cases are over 35,000 daily with a death rate of over 150 daily. So we can accurately say that London is still experiencing a health crisis.
If we look at the experience of living in London without a look into statistics, you would frankly think the opposite. Apart from the multitude of social distancing posters and mask mandate signs, as well as the use of masks themselves, life seems largely normal. This might be an attest to government policy, or the contrast to those who lived in much stricter countries. However, while it is pleasant to live in a country where a sense of normality is somewhat achieved, a further look into statistics and comparison to other cities and countries, also taking into account vaccine rates would indicate that despite the façade of normality, London is still in a health crisis.

2022 Update:
Since returning to the Uk this January, I found London to be a different place to when I left. Since there was a massive surge in cases in London rules had tightened majorly, to my content. Masks and social distancing were now mandatory in shops and on public transport, as I would say that 99% of people were following those rules, showing that when asked, London will band together for the safety of all.
It would be interesting to do a follow up paragraph about impact of omicron from your pub date (early Dec) to xmas/new year. Did you manage to avoid it? Hope so. Nicola
